What we do

We have identified that a major barrier to keeping learners in school is a lack of resources, which often leads to struggles with confidence and participation.

One of the ways we are addressing this is by ensuring that our learners have school shoes.

In particularly impoverished areas, school shoes are not always a necessity, but a luxury. Resources are often prioritized for feeding schemes, which are essential to a learner’s progress at school.

My Walk

The My Walk project is an innovative partnership between Adcock Ingram Critical Care and Netcare, officially launched on 5 February 2020 at Chivirikani Primary School in Katlehong, south-east of Johannesburg. At the launch, 1,300 pairs of shoes were donated to the school. This project aims to improve the lives of children in underprivileged communities by providing school shoes, beginning in Gauteng and eventually expanding to other provinces across South Africa.

The initiative repurposes millions of used, non-hazardous hospital PVC drip bags, oxygen masks, and associated tubing—items that would otherwise end up in landfills—by recycling them into high-quality school shoes. My Walk represents a sustainable, long-term initiative that offers environmental benefits, enterprise development, and job creation opportunities. The project has gained recognition and support from the national government departments of Basic Education, Health, Social Development, and Trade, Industry and Competition.
